Update 1 on graduate exams

Dear future colleagues,

The university administration has decided to have you take a practical exam at the end of the semester. The format will be simple. You will be handed an exam sheet at the end of your written exam. To my knowledge, this will also be the format of the oral exam to reduce the chances of virus transmission. Please, check out the instructions document attached to this announcement for more details.

Our role in the fight against COVID-19

Dear students, colleagues, and accidental visitors of my page,

I get contacted by many asking what I am doing to help fight the COVID-19 pandemic. I want to thank them for addressing a professor of virology in the faculty of VETERINARY medicine about solving a human pandemic. This could only mean that they understand the role that veterinary microbiologists have played in the past, and continue to play, to alleviate the impact of serious biological threats. It means that they understand the One Health concept.

High standards in higher education

Dear students and colleagues,

In the age of COVID-19, it is clear, even for laymen, that knowledge, understanding, science, and humanity are key to the survival of humans. Yet, some people consider these trying times as a means to abandon their responsibility to seek quality. Well, it is not.

Some of our students will want to get an easy test. Some of our colleagues will want to give them an easy test; after all, isn’t it enough that we are facing a pandemic? In my opinion, this is a flawed argument. Please, consider the following:

Continuing to study your courses while at home

Dear students and future colleagues,

Humanity is under the direct pressure of a new pandemic, COVID-19. It is caused by SARS-CoV-2 a new member of Coronaviridae. COVID-19 makes it clear how a single pathogen that jumps from an animal to man can wreak havoc on the global public health and economy. It also shows how important it is to work within the One Health Concept.

Non-primate Hepaciviruses in Egyptian Equids

Equine hepacivirus (EqHV) is one of the non-primate hepaciviruses recently discovered in the Americas, Europe and Asia. It is a hepatotropic member of the genus hepacivirus of Flaviviridae. They are close relatives of hepatitis C virus. Information on EqHV epidemiology, pathogenesis and genetic diversity is limited. Information regarding prevalence and distribution of NPHV in Egyptian equids does not exist.
