Dear future colleagues,
The following is a description of the undergraduate course Virology 312 student activity requirements.
The department board has chosen to make things fun for you this semester, and of course less expensive. You are required to complete the “Virology in the News” activity. Each of you is required to find a news article involving one of the animal or zoonotic viruses. The article should be about a disease outbreak or a virus-related phenomenon or discovery. It does not matter what the news article is discussing, even if it is related to a completely new field of science. Topics with high impact on humanity are favored. Once you find a news article that you think is interesting you should:
1. Visit the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) website (https://ictv.global/).
2. Go the page describing the general properties of the virus family (or genus) mentioned in the news article.
3. Copy the figures showing the general properties of the virion, its classification, and its genome.
4. Paste the figures together with the news article you selected on a single white page.
5. Remember to put your name and references (the web page addresses where you got the news article and the figures) at the bottom of the sheet below the article.
6. You must format the assignment so that it is interesting and enjoyable to read.
7. Print the sheet.
8. Place the sheet in a clear filing sheet.
9. Hand in the finished assignment to your laboratory instructor two weeks before the end of the semester.
You will be awarded 5 points for completing this activity on time. By completing this activity, you would have learned how to:
1. Find updated information related to viruses or virus infections in the news.
2. Find specific scientific information on virus-related discoveries and phenomena using international reference web-resources.
3. Appreciate how important and fun virology is.
4. Summarize specific scientific information that can be used by the public and specialists.
You will be awarded 5 points for completing this assignment on time.
Best of luck.
