Zeinab, A., Osman, E. A. Khalil, M. M., Arafa, Naglaa, and M. Gaber, "The Effect of Reminiscence on Self-Esteem, and Depression Among Elderly People", Journal of American Science, 2011. Abstract

As people enter old age, they begin to experience associated changes in their physical, mental and social health. Elderly individuals often develop feelings of loneliness, sullenness, depression and loss of self confidence. Reminiscence is a commonly-used clinical intervention to assist the elderly in adapting to the aging process. Therefore, this study was conducted to evaluate the effect of reminiscence on self-esteem, and depression among elderly people. A pre-post quasi-experimental design was utilized in this study. A sample of convenience of 30 institutionalized older adults was recruited from Dar El-Hana Geriatric home. Socio-demographic/medical data sheet, Mini-Mental State Exam (MMSE) scale, Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), and Self-esteem Scale, were used to achieve the purpose of this study. A reminiscence program session was held for 90 minutes for a total of 10 weeks (20 sessions), the program focus on particular stages of life using a semi-structured interview. Findings of this study indicated that, reminiscence intervention significantly raised self-esteem, and the reduction in depression levels did not reach statistical significance. To conclude reminiscence intervention is an effective alternative intervention which can help living-alone elderly adapt to the aging process. Further studies about reminiscence on a larger number of elderly from different geographical areas are recommended.

Mobarak, E. H., "Effect of Surface Roughness and Adhesive System on Repair Potential of Silorane-Based Resin Composite", Journal of Advanced Research, 2011. Abstract

This study was performed to evaluate the influence of surface roughness and adhesive system on the repair strength of silorane-based resin composite. Twenty-four substrate discs from silorane-based Filtek P90 were made and stored for 24 h. Half of the discs were roughened against 320 grit SiC paper while the other half was polished against 4000 grit SiC paper. All discs were etched with phosphoric acid. Repair resin composite, Filtek P90 or Filtek Z250, was bonded to the treated surfaces using their corresponding adhesive; Silorane Adhesive (SA) or Adper Scotchbond Multipurpose (SBMP) ending up with four repair groups. The groups were as follows: G1: Smooth + SA + Filtek P90; G2: Roughened + SA + Filtek P90; G3: Smooth + SBMP + Filtek Z250; G4: Roughened + SBMP + Filtek Z250. Additional six unrepaired discs from each resin composite (G5 and G6) were prepared to test the cohesive strength. After 24 h, discs (n = 6/group) were serially sectioned to obtain sticks (n = 30/group) for microtensile bond strength (?TBS) testing. Scanning electron microscopic

Ahmed, L. A., H. A. Salem, A. S. Attia, and A. M. Agha, "Effects of Different Preconditioning Therapies on Arrhythmias and Aortic Blood Flow in an in Vivo Rat Model of Ischaemia/ Reperfusion Injury", Heart, 2011. Abstract

Objective: The aim of the present study was to compare the cardioprotective effects of different therapies including local, remote, pharmacological and oxidative preconditioning in ischaemia/reperfusion injury in rats. Methodology Rats were randomly assigned into the following groups: sham-operated and myocardial ischaemia/reperfusion (40 min/10 min). Other groups were subjected to different preconditioning treatments before the operation. Two groups received oral doses of pioglitazone (10 mg/kg/day) or nicorandil (3 mg/kg/day) for 5 days. Other two groups were subjected to local or remote preconditioning by three cycles of 5 min of occlusion of either left descending coronary artery or right femoral artery followed by 5 min of reperfusion. The last two groups received either ozone (0.6 mg/kg/day in the first week followed by 1 mg/kg/day in the second week) or oxygen vehicle by rectal insufflations. Heart rate, ventricular arrhythmias and descending aortic blood flow were continuously recorded during the whole operation. Results: The arrhythmia score in all groups except ozone was reduced significantly compared to ischaemia/reperfusion group. Ventricular premature beats and bigeminy were significantly lowered in local preconditioning and pioglitazone groups. Trigeminy, salvos and ventricular tachycardia were completely abolished in local preconditioning and pioglitazone groups. Torsade de pointe was completely abolished in all treated groups except remote preconditioning. Ventricular tachycardia duration was significantly reduced in all groups compared to ischaemia/reperfusion group. Finally, descending aortic blood flow was seriously reduced during the incidence of ventricular arrhythmias which was significant in ischaemia/reperfusion group. All different preconditioning therapies show a protective effect against blood flow reduction. This was markedly observed in local preconditioning and ozone groups. Conclusion: Different preconditioning therapies exert a protective effect by reducing serious ventricular arrhythmias during myocardial ischaemia/reperfusion. This was markedly reflected in part by their blood flow preservative effects. Keywords: Arrhythmias; Ischemia; Nicorandil; Pioglitazone; Preconditioning; Reperfusion.

El-Gazayerly, O., and N. A.Sabry, "Efficacy and Safety of Pegylated Interferon in Children and adolescents Infected with Chronic Hepatitis C A Preliminary Study", Journal of pharmacy practice, 2011. Abstract

This study researches the efficacy and safety of pegylated interferon alpha-2a (pegIFNa-2a) in Egyptian children and adolescents diagnosed with hepatitis C virus. Thirty patients were enrolled to receive pegIFN once a week with ribavirin twice daily for 12 weeks; viral load and experienced adverse effects were then assessed. Of the 30 patients, 16 (53.33%) were cleared from the virus, showing early virologic response (EVR). Three patients (10%) showed a 2-log reduction by week 12, with an overall early response rate of 63.33%. Three patients who showed EVR after 4 weeks relapsed by week 12. Levels of serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) normalized at week 12. Adverse events included fever, myalgia, headache, flu-like symptoms, fatigue, anemia, and leucopenia; 63.33% of the patients showed significant reduction in their body weight. Although the patients showed a reduction in average body mass index, this reduction was not significant. Hemoglobin values decreased within the first 2 weeks and then stabilized but not back to baseline. A significant reduction in the level of absolute neutrophil count (ANC) was observed by the 4th week and started to improve by the 12th week. Of the recruited patients, 29.4% were subjected to IFN dose reduction. None of the patients with neutropenia developed serious infection or sepsis. The authors concluded that pegIFN plus ribavirin therapy is promising when tested on Egyptian children.

El-Ghandour, N. M. F., "Endoscopic Treatment of Suprasellar Arachnoid Cysts in Children", Journal of Neurosurgery: Pediatrics, 2011. Abstract

Object: Suprasellar arachnoid cysts (SACs) are rare, comprising approximately 10% of all intracranial arachnoid cysts. Although neuroendoscopic management is emerging as a safe effective alternative to microsurgery, the type of endoscopic surgery whether ventriculocystostomy (VC) or ventriculocystocisternostomy (VCC) is still controversial. This study evaluates the role of endoscopy in the treatment of SACs in children. It compares VC and VCC, to see which procedure is superior among the long-term follow-up.

T, M., S. O, T. M, S. H, and N. M, "Endothelial Nitric Oxide Synthase and Angiotensinogen Gene Polymorphism in Coronary Artery Diseases in Egypt", Angiology., 2011. Abstract

Genetic factors contribute to the pathogenesis of coronary artery disease (CAD). We studied 100 patients with CAD and 50 healthy individuals to assess the association of endothelial nitric oxide (eNOS) polymorphism (Glu298Asp) and angiotensinogen polymorphisms (M235T) and CAD in an Egyptian population. Serum nitric oxide (NO) and angiotensin I levels were also measured. The frequency of Glu298Asp and M235T polymorphisms were higher in the CAD group compared with controls. The mean level of NO was significantly lower (P < .05) while angiotensin I was significantly higher (P < .05) in patients CAD than in controls. The frequency of eNOS TT allele of M235T variant was significantly higher in patients with CAD
