Dr El-Mahallawy is a professor of clinical pathology/microbiology at NCI, Cairo University. She graduated with a Bachelor degree of Medicine & Surgery (M.B.B.Ch) with extinction from the Faculty of Medicine (Kasr El-Aini School of Medicine), Cairo Universty (CU) in 1985. She had her residency training in laboratory medicine at NCI, CU; and completed her Master degree with extinction from Faculty of Medicine, CU in 1989. She accomplished her MD in laboratory medicine and hematologic malignancies from NCI, CU in1992; & became a lecturer of clinical pathology in 1993. In 1998, she was promoted to assisstant professor at NCI, CU; and a professor in 2003. She had a fellowship in Infectious Diseases from St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, USA in 2000; and infectious disease training at Children's Hospital, Boston, USA in 2008. Dr El-Mahallawy had two professional diplomas, Executive Management Diploma from the Institute of Mangement Development, AUC, Cairo in 2008; and Professional Certificate in Nosocomial Infection Control, Institute of Quality Management, AUC, Cairo in 2004.
Dr El-Mahallawy specialized in the diagnostics of infectious diseases in immunocompromised patients; cooperating with different departments of NCI for applying a multidisciplinary approach for management of different infections in cancer patients. She has a special interest in infections caused by multi-drug resistant pathogens and fungal pathogens; and have many international publications in her field of interest. She worked in the field of infection control and in recent years dedicated a lot of effort in implementing antibiotic stewardship program at NCI.
Dr El-Mahallawy was a memeber of the scientific committee for promotion of professors and assisstant professor of Clinical Pathology- Egyptian Universities Council- 2008- 2013. She is a member of the infection control committee of Supreme council of Egyptian Universities. She was Chairman of Clinical Pathology department committee at NCI from February 2018 to February 2020.
