Stereochemistry (Chem 243)

Pre-requisite

Students have to pass Chem 241 and Chem 242 before studying this course.

Course Objectives

The students should be able to describe the importance of the three dimensional structure of molecules and the effect of this on physical and chemical properties.

By the end of this course, the student is expected to:

1. Recognize which molecules will and which will not exhibit stereoisomerism.

2. Explain the workings of a polarimeter and the meanings of optical rotation and plane polarized light and calculate specific rotation.

Course Objectives

This course focuses on ionic and some radical reaction mechanisms appropriate to simple organic compounds as well as the uses of these reactions to carry out simple synthetic transformations.
