This poster presents a simplified picture of a PhD research's results. This research is nominated for Ramsar's international prize of scientific research by Faculty of Urban and Regional Planning- Cairo University, and recommended for wider applications and teaching within environmental planning education modules, by the experts who participated in its evaluation workshop (from different disciplines: Environmental science, Environmental Planning, GIS and remote sensing, and Decision makers). The main outcomes of this research include:
Developing An Ecosystem Approach Methodological Framework for Planning and Management of Coastal Wetlands: Coastal Wetlands are among the most productive ecosystems in the world. They are playing vital environmental roles, although they are facing serious increased challenges; such as effects of global warming and the dramatic impacts of human activities. The huge losses and deteriorations of this unique ecosystem on one hand and the rich and wide variety of development potentials on the other hand are requiring a special framework (FW) for planning and management to make the balance between objectives of preservation and development in order to reach sustainable development. Although the Ecosystem Approach (EA) is the most recommended one to meet sustainable development especially in such sensitive ecosystems, it is still in its initial generic stage. The suggested framework transformed principles of EA into an integrated methodology for planning and management in coastal wetlands. However it has high capabilities for wider applications
Developing an Adaptable Ecosystem Services Assessment Tool: Sustaining the Ecosystem Services is crucial objective of the suggested FW. It is integrated in several stages such as assessment of current status, evaluation of development proposals, and evaluation of outcomes. So the research developed it especially to meet these objectives.
Then, Integrating GIS and remote sensing in the suggested assessment tool.
