Dr Abdelwahab is a Professor of Pediatrics and Pediatric hematology, Cairo University Pediatric Hospital, the biggest tertiary Pediatric Hospital in Egypt and one of the biggest in the Middle East. She did her Msc and MD in Pediatrics. She did postgraduate training in Pediatrics , Pediatric hematology and Neurology as well as worked in Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Glasgow and Edinburgh, Scotland and sat for membership exam. She is interested in the field of pediatric bleeding and hemostasis and received specialized training at the Manchester Hemophilia Comprehensive Care Centre, Manchester Royal Infirmary, UK with some publications in the field. She is a member of the EHA, ESPHI, WFH and ISTH. She is also a member of the Egyptian American Gaucher disease (GD) committee , international project and a part of the GD treating physicians , Hope project giving oral biannual presentations on Egyptian/US teleconference meetings .
She started comprehensive care for children with inherited coagulopthies in Cairo University Pediatric Hospital upgrading their service as well as starting a local hospital registry as part of a national registry and put a management protocol in view of severe resource constraint. She also updated management guidelines for patients with platelet disorders as well as thrombophilias. She is part of the international rare bleeding disorders registry as well as 2 international collaborative projects on afibrinogenemia.
Her other interest is Gaucher disease especially type 3 managing a big diverse cohort of more than 60 patients .She has a review article published on management of GD and her most recent publication in the field is. “Mesenteric and Mediastinal lymphadenopathy in Egyptian Children with Gaucher Disease types 1 and 3 treated with Enzyme Replacement Therapy” .She participated in several GD courses giving oral case study presentations.She was an invited guest speaker in GLF 2013 giving a talk on “Behavioural changes in Gaucher disease type 3 children” and in EWGGD 2012 giving a talk on “Mesenteric and Mediastianl lymphadenopathy in GD” .She participated in several GD meetings(world Symposium, SSIEM,EHA) giving presenations on many interesting GD topics; neuronopathic GD , lung involvement in GD and impact of ERT , dental problems , cardiac and bone involvement . She participated in writing and reviewing GD booklets mainly addressing type 3 GD and is part of the group working on an updated neurology severity scoring system for GD. She is working on starting a patient group for GD in Egypt.
