Nuclear reactions between two heavy interacting ions with nucleon transfer have been reconsidered. The direct nuclear reaction mechanism is considered. Different reaction processes are considered for single neutron or proton stripping and pickup reactions. The interacting nuclear potential of the transferred nucleon is taken to have the form of the Skyrme-type potential. With this representation for the nuclear potential of the transferred nucleon, an expression for the differential cross section is obtained by using the distorted-wave Born approximation. This expression is applied and considered for the heavy ion reactions with incident heavy ion projectiles B10, C13, O16, O18, and S32 bombarding the heavy targets Al27, Si28, Si29, Si30, and S32. The energies of the incident heavy ions have values in the range between 36.0 and 100.0 MeV. Numerical calculations of the differential cross sections are carried out. The theoretically calculated angular distributions are in good agreements with the experimental measurements. Reasonable spectroscopic factors are extracted from the present calculations. NUCLEAR REACTIONS Nucleon stripping and nucleon pickup induced by 36.0-100.0 MeV B10, C13, O16, O18, and S32 on Al27, Si28, Si29, Si30, and S32; calculated σ(θ). The results of hexamethylmelamine therapy in 20 patients with advanced squamous cell head and neck cancer are reported. No patient had previously received chemotherapy. The dose of hexamethylmelamine was 8 mg/kg/day p.o. There was partial response in 3/20 (15%) patients. The duration of the response was 6-10 weeks. Twelve of 20 (12/20) patients had stable disease for a median of 8 weeks (range: 4-18 weeks). Hexamethylmelamine was well tolerated with the only significant toxicity being mild nausea and vomiting. This drug deserves further evaluation in the treatment of head and neck cancer.

Buchet, R., L. Beauvais, and C. Sandorfy, "Hydrogen bond equilibrium constants of some unusual nucleotide base pairs.", Journal of biomolecular structure & dynamics, vol. 2, issue 1, pp. 221-32, 1984 Aug. Abstract

Approximate hydrogen bond association constants were determined for base pairs formed by an adenine derivative and a number of unusual pyrimidine bases. A series is found in which the H-bond strength in the base-pairs varies. In certain cases the H-bond equilibrium constant is larger than in the adenine-thymine pair. Inosine derivatives seem to have a non-negligible chance of replacing guanosine in the guanosine-cytosine pair. Infrared, near-infrared (overtone) and NMR spectra were used to determine the equilibrium constants.

Two groups of buffalo calves were infected with Sarcocystis fusiformis sporocysts. Animals of the first group received each 5 X 10(5) sporocysts, those of the second group 5 million sporocysts. All calves were clinically normal during 6 weeks after infection. Minor changes were observed in the blood cytology, serum alkaline phosphatase, glutamic oxalacetic transaminase, glutamic pyruvic transaminase, total proteins, urea and glucose of infected buffalo calves.
