Fabrication of a novel ion selective electrode for determining alcaftadine was achieved. The glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was utilized as a substrate in fabrication of an electrochemical sensor containing polyaniline (PANI) as an ion-to-electron transducer layer. A PVC polymeric matrix and nitrophenyl-octyl-ether were employed in designing the ion-sensing membrane (ISM). Potential stability was improved and minimization of electrical signal drift was achieved for inhibition of water layer formation at the electrode interface. Potential stability was achieved by inclusion of PANI between the electronic substrate and the ion-sensing membrane. The sensor's performance was evaluated following IUPAC recommendations. The sensor dynamic linear range was from 1.0 × 10 to 1.0 × 10 mol L and it had a 6.3 × 10 mol L detection limit. The selectivity and capabilities of the formed alcaftadine sensor were tested in the presence of its pharmaceutical formulation excipients as well as its degradation products. Additionally, the sensor was capable of quantifying the studied drug in a rabbit aqueous humor. Method's greenness profile was evaluated by the means of Analytical Greenness (AGREE) metric assessment tool.

This paper describes the design of a Gilbert mixer based channel to channel gain and phase mismatch calibration loop for 5G 4 channels 24:30 GHz beamformers. The input dynamic range of the loop is 14dB centered around the 5G beamformer channel average output power (SdBm) and the simulation results shows that the calibration accuracy is +/-0.25 dB of gain variation and +/-2.5 degrees of phase variations between all channels. The proposed Gilbert cell calibration loop is designed in TSMC 65nm technology with static power consumption of 4 m Watts from 3.3V supply.

The work of this paper proposes a method for multi-dimensional optimization of functionally graded materials (FGMs) composition. The method is based on using polynomial expansion of the volume fraction of the constituent materials. In this approach, the design variables are the coefficients of the polynomial expansion which to be determined through the optimization process. This method provides much more flexibility in the design compared to the methods based on the power-law, or the exponential-law which will in turn lead to more optimal designs. Also it requires much less number of design variables compared to the grid based approaches which is also utilized for two-dimensional optimization of FGMs structures. As an application of the proposed method, the optimization of a simply supported Aluminum plate reinforced with Silicon Carbide nano-particles is considered. Cost plays a very important role for this type of structures, since the cost of the reinforcements such as Silicon Carbide nano-particles, or carbon nano-tubes is too high. So the aim of the optimization process is to minimize the amount of the reinforcement required to satisfy certain performance criteria. Both static, and dynamic cases are considered in this work; a plate under a transverse pressure distribution is considered as the static case, and the panel flutter problem as the dynamic case.

Background

Hepatocellular carcinoma is considered one of the most common cancers occurring in human population all over the world. It became an increasingly threatening malignancy due to both morbidity and mortality. Chronic viral hepatitis B and hepatitis C are two risk factors, which account for 80–90% of all HCC cases worldwide. Alfa Feto protien is used as a tumor marker for HCC diagnosis and prognosis prediction; however, its false negative rate when used alone is as high as 40% for patients with early-stage HCC. AFP levels remain normal in 15–30% of all the patients, even patients with advanced HCC. It has been demonstrated that miRNAs (MicroRNAs) are an important class of non-coding RNAs. They act as tumor oncogenes or suppressors and are involved in the HCC development. MiRNAs are endogenous nucleotides that can be found in intra- and extracellular spaces, such as the blood, urine, and saliva.

The study evaluated the miRNA 21 as a novel biomarker in patients with HCV related hepatocellular carcinoma.

Results

The study was conducted on three groups. Group (1) included 25 patients with liver cirrhosis due to hepatitis C virus infection. Group (2) included 25 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) on top of liver cirrhosis due to hepatitis C virus infection. Group (3) included 10 normal control subjects. There was a significant difference in the mean level of miRNA between the three groups with p value < 0.001 with the highest value in group 2 ( 8.28 ± 2.55), then in group1 (5.04 ± 2.11) and the lowest in group 3 (control) (1.02 ± 0.07). MiRNA 21 has a sensitivity of 68% and a specificity of 96%, to differentiate between the liver cirrhosis group and HCC group.

Conclusion

miRNA 21 can be a promising marker for detection of patients with HCV-related hepatocellular carcinoma, with higher specificity compared to α feto protein; however, its cost is higher.

It has been established that H+ secretion can be maintained in frog stomach in the absence of exogenous CO2 by using a nutrient bathing fluid containing 25 mM H2PO4 (pH approximately equal to 4.5) or by lowering the pH of a nonbuffered nutrient solution to about 3.0-3.6. Exogenous CO2 in the presence of these nutrient solutions uniformly caused a marked decrease in H+ secretion, PD, adn short-circuit current (Isc) and an increase in transmucosal resistance (R). Elevation of nutrient [k+] to 83 mM reduced R significantly but transiently without change in H+ when nutrient pH less than 5.0, whereas R returned to base line and H+ increased when nutrient pH greater than 5.0. Acidification of the nutrient medium in the presence of exogenous CO2 results in inhibition of the secretory pump, probably by decreasing intracellular pH, and also interferes with conductance at the nutrient membrane. Removal of exogenous CO2 from standard bicarbonate nutrient solution reduced by 50% the H+, PD, and Isc without change in R; K+-free nutrient solutions reverse these changes in Isc and PD but not in H+. The dropping PD and rising R induced by K+-free nutrient solutions in 5% CO2 - 95% O2 are returned toward normal by 100% O2. Our findings support an important role for exogenous CO2 in maintaining normal acid-base balance in frog mucosa by acting as an acidifying agent.
