Diabetic neuropathy is a chronic condition that affects a significant number of individuals with diabetes. Streptozotocin injection intraperitoneally to rodents produces pancreatic islet β-cell destruction causing hyperglycemia, which affect the brain leading to memory and cognition impairment. Dapagliflozin may be able to reverse beta-cell injury and alleviate this impairment. This effect may be via neuroprotective effect or possible involvement of the antioxidant, and anti-apoptotic properties. Forty rats were divided into four groups as follows: The normal control group, STZ-induced diabetes group, STZ-induced diabetic rats followed by treatment with oral dapagliflozin group and normal rats treated with oral dapagliflozin. Behavioral tests (Object location memory task and Morris water maze) were performed. Serum biomarkers (blood glucose and insulin) were measured and then the homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) was calculated. In the hippocampus the followings were determined; calmodulin, ca-calmodulin kinase Ⅳ (CaMKIV), protein kinase A (PKA) and cAMP-responsive element-binding protein to determine the transcription factor CREB and its signaling pathway also Wnt signaling pathway and related parameters (WnT, B-catenin, lymphoid enhancer binding factor LEF, glycogen synthase kinase 3β). Moreover, nuclear receptor-related protein-1, acetylcholine and its hydrolyzing enzyme acetylcholine esterase, oxidative stress parameter malondialdehyde (MDA) and apoptotic parameter caspase-3 were determined. STZ was able to cause destruction to pancreatic β-cells which was reflected on glucose levels causing diabetes. Diabetic neuropathy was clear in the rats performing the behavioral tests. Memory and cognition parameters in the hippocampus were negatively affected. Oxidative stress and apoptotic parameter were elevated while the electrical activity was declined. Dapagliflozin was able to reverse the previously mentioned parameters and behavior. Thus, to say dapagliflozin significantly showed neuroprotective action along with antioxidant, and anti-apoptotic properties.

Many people with sickle cell disease (SCD) or other anemias require chronic blood transfusions, which often causes iron overload that requires chelation therapy. The iron chelator deferiprone is frequently used in individuals with thalassemia syndromes, but data in patients with SCD are limited. This open-label study assessed the efficacy and safety of deferiprone in patients with SCD or other anemias receiving chronic transfusion therapy. A total of 228 patients (mean age: 16.9 [range, 3-59] years; 46.9% female) were randomized to receive either oral deferiprone (n = 152) or subcutaneous deferoxamine (n = 76). The primary endpoint was change from baseline at 12 months in liver iron concentration (LIC), assessed by R2* magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The least squares mean (standard error) change in LIC was -4.04 (0.48) mg/g dry weight for deferiprone vs -4.45 (0.57) mg/g dry weight for deferoxamine, with noninferiority of deferiprone to deferoxamine demonstrated by analysis of covariance (least squares mean difference 0.40 [0.56]; 96.01% confidence interval, -0.76 to 1.57). Noninferiority of deferiprone was also shown for both cardiac T2* MRI and serum ferritin. Rates of overall adverse events (AEs), treatment-related AEs, serious AEs, and AEs leading to withdrawal did not differ significantly between the groups. AEs related to deferiprone treatment included abdominal pain (17.1% of patients), vomiting (14.5%), pyrexia (9.2%), increased alanine transferase (9.2%) and aspartate transferase levels (9.2%), neutropenia (2.6%), and agranulocytosis (0.7%). The efficacy and safety profiles of deferiprone were acceptable and consistent with those seen in patients with transfusion-dependent thalassemia. In most practical combustion devices, the actual combustion process occurs within different mixture inhomogeneity levels. Investigating the mixture fraction field upstream of the reaction zones of these flames is an essential step toward understanding their structure, stability, and emission formation. In this study, the mixture fraction fields were measured for turbulent non-reacting inhomogeneous mixtures immediately downstream from the slot burner exit, using Rayleigh scattering imaging. The slot burner had two concentric slots. The inner air slot can be recessed at distances upstream from the exit of the outer fuel slot, allowing various degrees of mixture inhomogeneity. Mixture fraction field statistics and the two-dimensional gradient were utilized to characterize the impact of the air-to-fuel velocity ratio, global equivalence ratio, fuel composition, Reynolds number, and the premixing length on the mixture mixing field, and thus flame stability. These impacts were evaluated by tracking the normalized mean mixture fraction and mixture fraction fluctuation transition across the regime diagram for partially premixed flames. The results showed that the air-to-fuel velocity ratio was the critical parameter affecting the mixture fraction field for the short premixing length. Stability results showed that the level of mixture inhomogeneity mainly influenced the flame stability. High flame stability is achieved if a large portion of the inhomogeneous mixture fraction is within the fuel flammability limits.

With the widespread use of variable speed drives, a robust scheme that can detect and diagnose bearing faults under fixed and variable speed conditions becomes essential for reliable operation. Unfortunately, most of the reported methods in the literature are dedicated to working under fixed speed and will face challenges under variable speed conditions. Besides, most of them require detailed bearing information that may be unavailable in the real world. Therefore, in this paper, a new scheme is proposed for bearing faults detection and diagnosis under fixed and time varying speed conditions. The proposed scheme is based on the analysis of vibration signals using the persistence spectrum that can provide images rich with health-related features largely independent from rotating speed. Then, the produced image is compared with priorly stored images of the persistence spectrum of a healthy case. This comparison is performed using the multi-scale structural similarity index, which is a robust basis for images comparison without the need for training or expert knowledge. The obtained index is compared against an adaptive threshold for fault detection. Upon detecting a fault, the persistence spectrum image is compared with that of stored different fault types for fault diagnosis. The proposed scheme is extensively validated using three experimental datasets under different speed conditions. The results show that it can detect bearing faults in an earlier stage without the need for bearing specifications or shaft speed. Moreover, it can successfully diagnose bearing faults severity with accuracy reaching 100% with the minimum required data.

Equid alphaherpesvirus 1 (EHV-1) is the most important virus causing pathological disorders in horses and causes persistent outbreaks of upper respiratory tract infection, ocular affections, abortion, and neurological disorders with high mortality in Arabian horses in Egypt. As EHV-1 is a very contagious disease, the quick and accurate diagnosis are important to broaden our understanding of EHV-1 in the field, implicate strong preventive, and control measures. Sixty-six samples collected over a period of 4 years were examined. Most of samples originated from Cairo and Giza governorates from respiratory, abortigenic and neurological outbreaks. EHV-1 was diagnosed in these clinical cases by immunohistochemistry using monoclonal antibody against EHV-1 glycoprotein B and molecular detection using gB, ORF33 specific real-time PCR. Molecular characterization of glycoprotein B (gB, ORF33) gene was applied for confirmation. Molecular characterization revealed that the ORF33 sequences of this study were identical. These sequences were closely related to the European EHV-1 strains. Furthermore, EHV-1 sequences in this study showed little to no differences for the amino acid sequences compared to previously published sequences. This study would be valuable for monitoring of EHV-1 infection in Egypt and determining the gB gene sequence of newly identified EHV-1 field strains which is the most conserved region in the viral DNA and frequently used as a target for diagnostic PCR protocols for the future outbreaks.

Equid alphaherpesvirus 1 (EHV-1) is an important virus causing pathological disorders in horses. This highly contagious pathogen causes persistent outbreaks of upper respiratory tract infection, ocular affections, abortion, and neurological disorders with high mortality in Arabian horses in Egypt. The quick and accurate diagnosis is important to broaden our understanding about EHV-1 in the field, and to implicate stronger preventive, and control measures. Sixty-six Arabian horses from Cairo and Giza governorates were sampled from respiratory, abortigenic and neurological outbreaks over a period of 4 years. EHV-1 was diagnosed in these cases by immunohistochemistry using monoclonal antibody against EHV-1 glycoprotein B and molecular detection using gB, ORF33 specific real-time PCR. EHV-1 was detected in 25 cases, mostly from abortigenic outbreaks (14 abortions, 3 stillbirths, and two early neonatal deaths), in addition to 5 respiratory affections and single EHV-1 myeloencephalopathy. Molecular characterization revealed that the ORF33 sequences from this study were almost identical and closely related to the European EHV-1 strains. Furthermore, no difference in the amino acid sequences compared to previously published EHV-1 sequences from Egypt. The data in this study provides some insights about the prevalance of EHV-1 infection in Arabian horses, discusses EHV-1 diagnostic approaches, highlights the importance of accurate diagnosis and the importance of pregnant mare vaccination, and adds to the previous knowledge about EHV-1 in Egypt which may help in better controlling EHV-1 infections in the future.
