abd elaziz, M., M. Ali, S. yassin, and A. S. raafat and rashad, "Study on the effects of some probiotics on the performance, clinicopathological and histopathological changes of Oreochromis niloticus", Veterinary Medical Journal, vol. 55, no.3 , pp. 879-897, 2007. Abstract

The presen study was carried out to evaluate the use of some probiotics on the growth rate of tilapia fishes and to determine its effect on some hematological and histopathological parameters. Two different commercial probiotics which includes biogen and moreyeast were evaluated for 8weeks. In the experiment, fifty Oreochromis niloticus fishes were classified to 3 groups,Group (1): consisted of 20 fishes which fed diet supplemented by biogen at a dose of 2 kg/ton diet. Group (2): consisted of 20 fishes which fed diet supplemented by moreyeast at a dose of 5 kg/ton diet and Group (3): was control group which consisted of 10 fishes fed diet without probiotics. At the end of the experimental period both biogen and moreyeast administrated groups revealed a significant increase in the body weight gain (W.G.). The results showed significant increase in the values of RBCs, PCV and Hb throughout the experimental period except group 1 (received biogen) at the 6th week of experiment comparing to control group. Fish group received moreyeast (Group 2) had the pronounced effect than group 1. Assessment of leukogram revealed significant leukocytosis allover the experimental period in different groups except during the 2nd week in group 2 (received moreyeast) and at the 6th week in both probiotic administrated groups comparing to control group. Fish group received biogen had pronounced effect comparing to moreyeast administrated group. differential leukocytic picture was recorded. Histopathological examination revealed The biogen and moreyeast administerd groups showed marked activation of the melano-macrophage centers which is a component of reticuloendothelial system and hence part of the defensive system of fish indicating immunoenhancment. the study concluded that: The examined probiotic were safe for the Oreochromis niloticus fish.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: Laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (LRP) has been refined by experienced surgeons into a competitive treatment alternative for localized prostate cancer. Less is known, however, about the outcomes of "learning curve" cases from newly trained surgeons. We prospectively studied 100 cases of LRP performed by 2 senior and 2 junior surgeons and addressed the rates of positive margins-an important early endpoint of oncologic efficacy.

METHODS: 100 consecutive cases of LRP were performed by two senior (n=62) and two junior surgeons (n=38) by a 5-port transperitoneal route. Whole-mount step-section prostate specimens were examined by Stanford protocol.

RESULTS: Positive margins occured in 25% of cases: 18% for pT2a (2/11), 18% for pT2b (11/61), 45% for pT3a (10/22), and 50% for pT3b (2/4) (p=0.002 pT2 vs. pT3). By surgeon experience, the rates were 19% (12/62) for senior and 34% (13/38) for junior (p=0.04). However, in a multiple logistic regression analysis, only pathologic stage (p=0.083) and Gleason sum (p=0.0133) reached statistical significance, while surgeon experience did not (p=0.0992).

CONCLUSION: Positive margin rates after laparoscopic radical prostatectomy are significantly influenced by pathologic stage and Gleason score, and are within the range reported from open series. The higher positive margin rate from junior surgeons, although not statistically significant, suggests the need for further study and continued mentoring during surgery and/or video review of cases to improve oncologic results.

The present investigation focused on the possible hepatoprotective potential of captopril on carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced acute liver injury in mice. Twenty-four hours after a single intraperitoneal injection of CCl4 (20 microl/Kg), hepatotoxicity was evidenced in the serum by elevated levels of aspartate transaminase (AST; EC:, alanine transaminase (ALT; EC: and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH; EC: and in the liver by depleted level of reduced glutathione (GSH), enhanced activity of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px; EC: 1I.11.1.9) and elevated level of lipid peroxides (LP). Captopril was given orally at three dose levels viz., 10, 25 and 50 mg/Kg/day for three consecutive days before subjecting the animals to the hepatotoxin. With the exception of the lowest dose namely, 10 mg/Kg/day, captopril afforded protection against CCl4-induced hepatotoxicity to different extents. Thus, the elevated activities of the enzymes AST, ALT, LDH and GSH-Px as well as the enhanced lipid peroxidation were markedly reduced below those elicited by the hepatotoxin, reaching values closer to the control, though still statistically higher. Captopril, however, did not ameliorate the depletion of GSH produced by CCl4. The data reported herein reveal a protective potential of captopril against the acute hepatotoxicity induced by CCl4 in mice. This hepatoprotection could be attributed, at least in part, to the free radical scavenging properties of the drug.

Objective. The objective of this study is to evaluatethe efficacy of image-guided
systems in nasal and skull base surgeries.Study design. This is a prospective case
control study. Material and methods. A total number of 24 patients were included in this
study. The relevant pre-operative, operative and post-operative records were collected
and analyzed. Results:The mean total operative time was greater for the imageguidance
surgery group (130 minutes; range 95-160 minutes) than for the control
group (119 minutes; range 85-150 minutes). However, the mean actual operative time
was less for the image-guidance surgery group (93 minutes; range 65-120 minutes)
than the control group (99 minutes; range 70-130 minutes). The image-guidance
surgery group had no major complications. However the control group had 3 major
complications (25%).The average estimated blood loss (EBL) was higher for the
image-guidance surgery group (395 mL; range 130-1100 mL) than the control group
(380 mL; range 100-950 mL).Conclusion: Image guided system may reduce the
complications associated with endoscopic sinus surgery and allow for a more thorough
