Assistant Professor

Ph.D. in Chemistry (Organic Chemistry major and Biochemistry minor), Wayne State University, Detroit, MI, USA, 2017

M.Sc. in Pharmaceutical Sciences (Pharmaceutical Organic Chemistry), Faculty of Pharmacy, Cairo University, Cairo, Egypt, 2011

B.Sc. in Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Faculty of Pharmacy, Cairo University, Cairo, Egypt, 2006

Dr. Ahmed received a bachelor degree in Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences from Faculty of Pharmacy, Cairo University in 2006 with honors. In 2008, he joined the department of Pharmaceutical Organic Chemistry, Faculty of Pharmacy, Cairo University as a teaching and research assistant, where he gained a master degree in  pharmaceutical sciences (pharmaceutical organic chemistry major) in 2011 from Cairo University. During his M.Sc. training he worked on the design, molecular docking, synthesis of novel pyrazolopyrimidine anti-cancer agents, and some of them displayed promising anticancer activity when tested with the NCI-60 cell lines at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Developmental Therapeutics Program (DTP, Rockville, MD). During his Ph.D study at Wayne State University with Mary Kay Pflum, he worked on design, synthesis, and biological screening of several small molecules targeting different HDAC isoforms. He synthesized and screened several analogs of the FDA-approved drug SAHA (Vorinostat) both in vitro and in cellulo, and several of them showed unique isoform selectivity and have been patented. He also performed several molecular docking studies to rationalize the unique selectivity of these analogs. In addition, Dr. Ahmed designed, synthesized and screened several potential HDAC1 selective inhibitors, based on both rational design, and molecular modeling aided design (with Leadit program).

Dr. Ahmed worked at several universities at different undergraduate levels. He taught different classes in Egyptian universities (Cairo University and Future University) for about 5 years, and at Wayne State University for 4 years, where he taught different quiz classes, in additon to advanced organic synthesis lab for senior students. He received 3 different awards at Wayne State University for excellence in teaching and outstanding teaching records and evaluations. In addition, he received graduate teaching assistantship award for four consecutive years at Wayne State University.

In 2017 Dr. Ahmed Joined Faculty of Pharmacy, Cairo University as a faculty member with a research focus on rational design, computer aided drug design, docking and synthesis of small molecule inhibitors with different biological activities. In addition, he is interested in design and synthesis of irreversible enzyme inhibitors.
