Bio

Dr. Mostafa H. Kamel is a Professor of applied Geophysics in the Geophysics Department, Faculty of Science, Cairo University. He received B.Sc. in Geology, Diploma in applied Geophysics, M.Sc. and PhD in Geophysics from Cairo University, Faculty of Science in 1981, 1982, 1985, and 1989 respectively. He is one of the staff of Cairo University since 1981 until now, and at year 2003 he was promoted to become the Chairman of the Geophysics Department, Faculty of Science, Cairo University for 10 years. In 2010, he was appointed as a Director of Basel Convention Regional Center for Training and Technology Transfer for Arab States in Egypt on permanent basis. The BCRC-Egypt covers the region of North Africa and West Asia for the Arab-Speaking countries. During this period he was chosen as a Minister of Environmental affair from 2011 to Jan 2013.

He has numerous technical publications in international journals and journals on a variety of topics in formation evaluation, reservoir quality assessment and well geophysics such as SPWLA, CWLS, Japan. - SPWLA Chapter, SEG Seminars, and Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering.

During the past ten years, he made many visits to Arab and foreign countries and held meetings with officials from governments and the private sector and some environment ministers concerned with the environment to discuss aspects of cooperation and the needs of countries within the scope of the Basel Convention with the aim of preparing the center’s work plan. He also conducted and prepared a large group of workshops, conferences, seminars and training courses. He provided training locally, regionally and internationally on many environmental issues related to the environmentally sound management of all types of waste. He also participated in developing strategies, legislation and laws for the environment, and managed many local and international projects. He also signed many memorandums of understanding at the regional and international levels.

Since his appointment as Regional Director, he has been keen to attend all the Conferences of the Parties held in Geneva every year and to attend all the preparatory conferences for the Conference of the Parties for the North Africa and West Asia region. He is a member of several partnerships such as the Plastic Waste Partnership Working Group (PWP), the Partnership Working Group on Household Waste (HHP), Electrical and Electronic Waste and the Partnership for Action on Computing Equipment (PACE/PACE II). He was participate in the meetings of the Open-ended Working Group (OEWG) and other meetings, in addition to attending the annual meeting of the directors of the permanent centers, which is held annually in Geneva in the presence of the Executive Secretary of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions. Member of the Environmental Network for Improving Regulatory Compliance on Illicit Trade (ENFORCE) and the Implementation and Compliance Committee of the Basel Convention (ICC).

He has many interests such as:  Apply and interpret well logging techniques and seismic techniques in reservoir characterization in terms of evaluating petrophysical, seismic and acoustic parameters, Environmental issues related to the environmentally safe management of hazardous waste within the framework of the UN Basel Convention,  Assess the risks of pesticides and their impact on humans and the environment, Safe management of chemical, medical and petroleum waste within the framework of international multilateral environmental agreements in the vision of Agenda 2030, Environmentally sound management of plastic waste to prevent marine litter and plastic pollution, Environmentally sound management of waste electrical and electronic equipment, Mechanisms for enforcing hazardous waste legislation, Sustainable development goals in implementing the multilateral environmental agreements on chemicals and waste in the context of the 2030 Agenda, Managing all types of solid waste systems (municipal, agricultural, demolition, and buildings), Collection, transportation and final disposal operations, Combating air pollution episodes, combating environmental degradation, and confronting environmental disasters.

Prof. Kamel has many prominent contributions and participations at the University of Cairo in the field of university curricula and scientific research. He participated in many international and regional conferences and parties to the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions since 2009 until now as well as participated in many seminars, workshops and conferences related to the environment and sustainable development.

He is a Member of the various scientific committees, college and department councils, as well as a member of the Basic Sciences Sector Committee of the Faculties of Science in the Arab Republic of Egypt. He published, alone and jointly with others, more than 50 research papers in international journals and specialized conferences in the fields of earth sciences.

He supervised many master’s and doctoral theses and appointed as an external examiner for many technical papers, scientific theses, and projects submitted to the United States Agency for International Development, in addition to arbitration and research projects for foreign universities and international bodies. He signed many cooperation agreements locally and internationally in many environmental fields and other related scientific projects. He received the Cairo University Encouragement Award in Geological Sciences in 2004. He is a member of many international journals and societies.
