Magdi F. Abadir was appointed as teaching assistant upon graduating from the Chemical Engineering department at the Faculty of Engineering in 1970 and has , since then, been teaching and conducting research in that department. He was promoted to Full Professor in 1986 (Inorganic Industries).
ADMINISTRATION: His administrative activities include heading the Chemical Engineering Department from 2005 to 2008, vice chairman to the scientific committee for promoting teaching staff in the Chemical Engineering Specialty from 2008 to 2012 and chairman of that committee from September 2016 to September 2019. He is also member of the committee of Nanotechnology, established by Cairo University. In September 2014, he has been appointed as member of the Technical Committee of the Scientific and Technical Development Fund (STDF) as representing the Engineering Sector. He was a member of the general Assembly of the Holding Company for Metallurgical Industries from January 2015 to December 2018. Owing to his major role in revamping this company in 2013, he was appointed In November 2020, as member of the Board of Directors of the Nasr Company for Glass and Crystal. On October 2024, he was appointed Non-executive Chairman of Board Members of that same company.
He has also been appointed as representative of the Chemical Engineering specialty in the Engineering Sector in 2014, as well as member of the Engineering Institutes committee as of 2016, both being affiliated to the Higher Universities Council.
RESEARCH: His main fields of interest include ceramic science and technology. To date he has published more than 120 papers, principally in that field, besides one book: Elements of Ceramic Technology. His works have been cited 1410 times and his H - Index reached 20 in August 2024. He has supervised more than 130 MSc and PhD theses and is currently involved in 9 such theses. He also regularly conducts joint research activities with the National Research Center (NCR), the Central Metallurgical Research and Development Institute (CMRDI) and other research centers.
He was appointed member of the editorial board of the journal OJMetal as of November 2022, and is regularly reviewing papers submitted for publications in several international journals such as Construction and Building Materials, Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry, Bulletin of the National Research Center, etc.
He has been cited in the 2005 and 2015 editions of the "Who's who in Thermal Analysis" (Prado, Budapest) as one of the most prominent 300 researchers in the field worldwide.
He was chosen as member of the international advisory board of the 12th International Congress of Materials and Technology, held in Grossetto, Italy in 2010.
He also attended several international conferences in US, Belgium and Italy. In 2005 he was chosen to represent Egypt in the international seminar on Cost Effectiveness in Cement Manufacture held in Mumbay, India.
TEACHING: He regularly teaches two undergraduate courses at the Chemical Engineering department: Mechanical Unit Operations and Ceramic Technology. Besides he teaches two graduate courses: Ceramic Science and Thermodynamics of materials. He also teaches an optional graduate course (Statistics for Chemical Engineers) for Master students and a course in Nanochemistry in a multidisciplinary Master program offered by the Faculty of Engineering, Cairo University . He has also taught similar courses from 1981 to 1991 at the Mechanical Engineering senior students at the AUC.
PROFESSIONAL: he has been involved in more than 80 consulting jobs with cement, ceramic and metallurgical factories. He also regularly prepares and executes field training courses in ceramic factories and related industrial facilities.
He was involved in simple design problems, troubleshooting and solving environmental related issues in cement, refractory and ceramic plants.
From 1990 to 1992 he acted as technical adviser for the Helwan Refractory Complex. He also was the technical adviser for Prima Ceramic Company (2006 to 2010) and more recently to Cleopatra Ceramic Company (2016), El Swedy cement company (2017)
As of 2018, he has been involved with the Egyptian Agency for Environmental Affairs as consultant in pollution abatement in cement factories.
He was chosen to review the institutional and academic activities of the Chemical Engineering Department of the University of Bahrain (April 2016).
