The energy dependence of the real part of the ion-ion interaction potential is studied using an energy density functional derived from the Negele realistic nucleon-nucleon interaction. It is found that the Negele force produces an ion-ion potential which varies slowly with energy compared to that derived using a simple two-body effective interaction.
