Abstract
Anesthetic management of parturients with cardiac diseases is a mounting challenge for anesthesiologists worldwide. This necessitates understanding the dynamic interaction between the pregnancy (especially delivery time) and different cardiac diseases, meticulously assessing the patients, and mitigating the drastic effects of anesthesia on the hemodynamic profile. Therefore, the collaborative approach in the field of cardio-obstetrics and the team-based strategy in addressing cardiac conditions is of utmost importance. Cardiac disease during pregnancy is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. Anesthesiologists need to understand the dynamic interaction between pregnancy and different cardiac diseases. Management of labor and delivery is done through a multidisciplinary team. The preoperative assessment is important to stratify the risks and optimize the cardiac functions of patients with high risk. Regional anesthesia can be used for both labor and cesarean section with careful titration of the local anesthetic and monitoring the hemodynamics.
