The physical properties of five different samples of azo merocyanine dyes, each dissolved in three different polar solvents (Acetonitrile, Ethanol and 1-propanol) with three different concentrations (3 × 10−5, 2 × 10−5 and 1 × 10−5 mol/L) have been measured experimentally. The refractive indices of the samples have been determined with an accuracy of ±1 × 10−4 by using an Abbe Refractometer of measuring range from 1.300 to 1.700. The measurements have been performed at four different wavelengths (435.8, 546.1, 578.0 and 589.3 nm). Other parameters such as Cauchy’s dispersion constants, resonance wavelength, molar polarizability, molar refractivity, absorption index and abbe number have been calculated. Also, viscosity, thermal expansivity and the effect of temperature on refractive index have been investigated. The intermolecular interactions between the solute and the solvent have been discussed. The physical characterization of merocyanine dyes provides valuable and important information needed for using them in many applications.

Abstract

The present research describes the synthesis of novel 5-benzoyl-N-substituted-amino- and 5-benzoyl-N-sulfonylamino-4-alkylsulfanyl-2-pyridones 5a-c and 6a-c via the reaction of 2-benzoyl-3,3-bis(alkylthio)acrylonitriles 2a-c with N-cyanoacetohydrazide 3 and cyanoaceto-N-phenylsulfonylhydrazide 4, respectively. Also, the reactivity of the compounds 5a-c toward hydrazine hydrate to give product 1H-pyrazolo[4,3-c]pyridine derivative 7 was studied. In addition, the reactivity of the 2a-c toward 1-cyanoacetyl-4 arylidenesemicarbazides 8a-c afforded 3,5-dihydro[1,2,4]triazolo[1,5-a]pyridine-6-carbonitrile derivatives (12-14)a-c, which reacted with hydrazine hydrate to give 3H-pyrazolo[4,3-c][1,2,4]triazolo[1,5-a]pyridine-6-carbonitrile derivatives 15a-c. The structures of the new products were characterized based on 1H nuclear magnetic resonance, 13C nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared, mass-spectroscopy, and elemental analyses. The products were screened in vitro for their antibacterial and antifungal activity properties.

The active moiety of is curcumin and has gained importance in various treatments of various disorders such as antibacterial, antiprotozoal, cancer, obesity, diabetics and wound healing applications. Several techniques had been exploited as reported by researchers for increasing the therapeutic potential and its pharmacological activity. Here, the dictum is the new room for the development of physicochemical, as well as biological, studies for the efficacy in target specificity. Here, we discussed nanoformulation techniques, which lend support to upgrade the characters to the curcumin such as enhancing bioavailability, increasing solubility, modifying metabolisms, and target specificity, prolonged circulation, enhanced permeation. Our manuscript tried to seek the attention of the researcher by framing some solutions of some existing troubleshoots of this bioactive component for enhanced applications and making the formulations feasible at an industrial production scale. This manuscript focuses on recent inventions as well, which can further be implemented at the community level.

In this study, we initiated an effort to generate information about beef safety in Uganda. Our entry point was to assess by atomic absorption spectrophotometry the levels of essential elements copper (Cu), cobalt (Co), iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn), and non-essential elements lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), and cadmium (Cd) in 40 beef samples collected from within and around Soroti (Uganda). The information was used to evaluate the safety of consuming such beef against the World Health Organization (WHO) limits. The latter was accomplished by (i) estimating the daily intake (EDI) of each metal in the study area, (ii) modeling the non-cancer health risk using the target hazard quotient (THQ) and (iii) modeling the cancer risk using the incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR). The study finds that the mean concentrations (±95% CI) and EDI were in the order of Fe > Zn > Cr > Ni > Pb > Co > Cu > Cd. Cancer risk was found to be due to Ni > Cr > Cd > Pb and significantly higher in children than adults. The latter particularly demonstrates the importance of Ni poisoning in the study area. Overall, while essential elements in our beef samples were below WHO limits (hence no health risks), non-essential elements had high health and cancer risks due to higher levels of Cr and Ni.
