Bio

Ahmed Khattab is a Professor in the Electronics and Electrical Communications Engineering Department at Cairo University that he joined in 2012 as an Assistant Professor. Dr. Khattab is the recipient of Egypt State First Class Medallion of Excellence in 2019, Egypt State Encouragement Award for Engineering Sciences in 2017, and Cairo University Excellence Award in Advanced Technology Sciences in 2020. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from the Center for Advanced Computer Studies (CACS) at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in 2011 under the direction of Prof. Magdy A. Bayoumi and co-advised by Prof. Dmitri Perkins. He received a Master of Electrical Engineering degree from Rice University in 2009. He also received M.Sc. and B.Sc. (honors) degrees in Electrical Engineering from Cairo University, Cairo, Egypt, in 2004 and 2002, respectively. Dr. Khattab in an IEEE Senior Member.

His current research interests are in the broad areas of wireless networking including, but not limited to, the Internet of Things (IoT), wireless sensor networks, vehicular networks, cognitive radio networks, security and machine learning. The emphasis of his research is on the design, optimization, and implementation of high-performance schemes for such wireless networks. His prior research experience ranges from resource management and scheduling in 4G and beyond wireless networks, opportunistic spectrum management and multi-antenna IEEE 802.11 networks, to compressive sensing. Dr. Khattab has authored/co-authored 3 books, a book chapter, over 100 journal and conference publications, and a U.S. patent. A detailed publications list is available here.

Dr. Khattab has served on the organization committee of several conferences such as IEEE ICECS 2013, IEEE ICECS 2015, IEEE ICM 2016, IEEE ICASSP 2017 and IEEE ICM 2019, and on the technical program committee of several conferences such as IEEE GLOBECOM, IEEE ICC, IEEE ICCCN, IEEE WF-IoT, IEEE WF-5G and many other prestigious conferences. He has been serving as a technical reviewer for various journals and conferences including, but not limited to, the IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking, IEEE/ACM Transactions on Mobile Computing, IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications, IEEE Internet of Things Journal, IEEE INFOCOM (2006-2009), ACM MobiCom (2006-2009), ACM Sigmetrics (2007), WiOpt (2007).

Dr. Khattab won the best student paper award from the IEEE Computer Society at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette student chapter in 2010 and in 2011, and was a finalist in the best paper award contest in the IEEE ICCCN 2008 conference. As an advisor, he won several awards such as the IEEE JAC-ECC 2019 Best Graduation Project Award (IoT Track & All Tracks), the IEEE ICM 2019 Best Graduation Projet Award (IoT Track), the IEEE ICM 2016 Best Ph.D. Thesis Award, and the 2021 Egyptain Engineering Day Best Graduation Project (Telecimmunications).

Dr. Khattab is currently serving as the counselor of the IEEE Cairo University Student Branch (IEEE-CUSB). The IEEE-CUSB was awarded the IEEE Region 8 Exemplary Student Branch Award for the 2017-2018, 2019-2020, and 2020-2021 academic years under his guidance. He was awarded the IEEE outstanding branch counselor in 2022.
