AbstractA two-plane two-dimensional UV Rayleigh thermometry is presented for turbulent premixed methane flame. Advantages of UV excimer lasers over visible lasers are studied for Rayleigh scattering. Applications of this technique to three dimensional structure of the reaction zone in turbulent flames is suggested.

AbstractA two-plane two-dimensional Rayleigh thermometry technique is presented for measurements in turbulent hydrocarbon flames. UV Rayleigh thermometry is used in this technique for what is to the author’s knowledge the first time. It shows the advantages of using UV excimer lasers rather than visible lasers for Rayleigh scattering. The present technique is useful for studying the three-dimensional structure of the reaction zone in turbulent flames. © 1993 Optical Society of America.
