A new series of fourteen dicationic flexible triaryl bis-guanidines 3a,b, bis-N-substituted guanidines 7a,b and 8a,b as well as bis-imidamides 9-12a,b having a 1,3- or 1,4-diphenoxybenzene scaffold backbone were synthesized. The in vitro activity of the novel dications as antiprotozoal agents against Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense (T.b.r.) and Plasmodium falciparum (P.f.) was assessed. Interestingly, six of the newly synthesized dications viz 3a,b, 7a,b and 8a,b were more active against P.f. than the reference drug pentamidine. Also, some of the dications showed moderate antitrypanosomal activity. Thermal melting analysis of the novel dications was performed to determine their ligand-DNA relative binding affinities. Finally, docking of the dications with an AT rich DNA oligonucleotide was executed to understand their binding mode with the minor groove.

A particularly useful approach for analyzing pooled cross sectional and time series data is Swamy's random coefficient panel data (RCPD) model. This paper examines the performance of Swamy's estimators and tests associated with this model by using Monte Carlo simulation. The Monte Carlo study shed some light into how well the Swamy's estimate perform in small, medium, and large samples, in cases when the regression coefficients are fixed, random, and mixed. The Monte Carlo simulation results suggest that the Swamy's estimate perform well in small samples if the coefficients are random and but it does not when regression coefficients are fixed or mixed. But if the samples sizes are medium or large, the Swamy's estimate performs well when the regression coefficients are fixed, random, or mixed.

Concha bullosa that is a pneumatization of the middle turbinate is a common anatomic variant; the obstruction of its ostium may lead to mucocele and even pyocele after infection of retained secretion. Although the condition is rare, mucopyocele of concha bullosa may be presented as a large nasal mass. However, the diagnosis could be suspected from its characteristic radiologic signs. We present an adolescent boy with mucopyocele of the concha bullosa.

Abstract: Proto-oncogenes are cellular genes that are expressed during normal growth and developmental processes.
Mutated versions of normal proto-oncogenes have been implicated in the development of human neoplasia. The
present study is designed to investigate the association among three factors, occupational exposure to pesticides,
aging and smoking habit and their effects to induce k-ras gene mutation in lymphocytes of Egyptian workers
occupationally exposed to a mixture of pesticides in outdoor fields in El-Fayoum governorate. The k-ras gene
mutation can occur by many factors and not one factor induces the mutation. So we used a multiple linear regression
statistical test to estimate the interaction among these factors. We have found k-ras mutations occurred in 9 of 45
workers ≥40 years while in workers <40 years the mutation was 1 of 29 and the workers who occupationally
exposed to pesticides more than 15 years showed 9 cases of 29 (31.0%) and between workers exposed to less than
15 years showed 1 case of 45 (2.2%). In addition the results investigated the workers who were smoking more than
20 years exhibited mutations in 7 cases of 13 (53.8%) than workers were smoking less than 20 years who showed
only 3 cases of 25 (12.0%). There is no significant multiple linear regression of both age and pesticide exposure
factors (P= 0.766 and P = 0.232, respectively) but there is a significant association between k-ras mutation and
smoking factor (P < 0.043). More addition a highly significant multiple linear regressions are found between k-ras
mutation and smoking years factor (P < 0.001). In conclusion the interaction between tobacco smoking and other
factors like aging and occupational exposure to pesticides may play together the main role of k-ras gene mutation
and the sequential studies in the various animal models may be useful to give advanced information how these
environmental mutagens affect on these genes.

Neoplastic fever (NF) is a paraneoplastic syndrome that is encountered in a significant proportion of patients with cancer. We present the case of a 37 year old female with matastatic renal transitional cell carcinoma. She was hospitalized with fever, constitutional symptoms, and worsening performance status. There was no identifiable infection source. In the third week of hospitalization, she was started on naproxen, resulting in complete lysis of fever, control of constitutional symptoms and improvement in performance status. She was discharged the next day and died of advanced disease within two months. Workup of NF can lead to unnecessary and prolonged hospitalization in patients near the end of their life, resulting in significant suffering. While it is important to rule out infection, an early trial of naproxen is inexpensive and, in patients who can tolerate NSAIDs, may provide good control for NF.
