SAP is planning to spend up to US$500 million in Africa from now through 2020 in hopes of dramatically growing its business on the continent, particularly in countries outside of South Africa, where it already has a strong base.

“In Africa, we plan to engage and invest in even more markets while helping build the appropriate talent base for the IT industry,” said Robert Enslin, SAP executive board member and global sales chief, in a statement released Tuesday.

The growth plan announced Tuesday includes a focus on selling specialized software for telecommunications, financial services, utilities and other verticals in South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, Angola and Morocco.

One of the worst-kept rumors in the Windows world is now confirmed to be true: HTC has brought its One (M8) phone hardware to the Windows Phone platform.

Known awkwardly as the HTC One (M8) for Windows, the new phone is physically identical to the M8 phone HTC released in April for Android, down to the millimeter. In fact, HTC seems to have gone out of its way to make the HTC One (M8) for Windows identical to its Android counterpart—within the Windows Phone environment, of course.

Take a second to think about what’s going on here: For years, hardware makers sold Windows PCs, then ported Linux to them. Now, the opposite is true. The Linux-based Android OS rules the smartphone market, and Windows Phone is the operating system knocking on the door.

Microsoft drove out Linux as the platform of choice during the netbook craze, and now the Windows maker is hoping it can do the same to the latest PC upstart, the Chromebook.

Back in July, Microsoft announced its intention in this regard by showing off the Hewlett-Packard Stream, an upcoming $199 laptop designed to take on the Chromebook. Slightly more expensive laptops around $249 are also due in the coming months from Acer and Toshiba.

5. Sony Xperia Z3

There is no rest for the weary: After launching the Xperia Z2 in February, Sony is already reported to be working on a successor. The company has scheduled a launch event on Sept. 3 ahead of the IFA trade show in Berlin.

The new Xperia Z3 is expected to use a faster Snapdragon 801 processor, but most of the other specs will be shared with the Xperia Z2. That includes a 5.2-inch screen with a 1920 by 1080 pixel resolution and 3GB of RAM.
