Biography

Prof. Rawia Tawfik is an associate professor at the Faculty of Economics and Political Science at Cairo University. She holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Politics from the University of Oxford and a Master of Science in Politics from Cairo University. She was a researcher at the German Development Institute (now the German Institute of Development and Sustainability) in Bonn and a visiting research fellow at the Africa Institute of South Africa (AISA) in Pretoria and the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) in Johannesburg. Her research interests include issues surrounding African political economy, hydro-politics and resource-based conflicts in Africa (especially Nile hydropolitics), Gulf-Horn of Africa relations, and the role of regional powers (especially Egypt and South Africa) in Africa and the Middle East. She co-ordinated research projects on the democratic developmental state in Africa and African regional integration for Partners in Development think tank in Cairo, and the Africa Institute of South Africa in Pretoria, respectively.  She has a number of research papers, book chapters, and journal articles on Nile hydropolitics, regional integration, good governance and development in Africa, and Egypt's foreign policy towards Africa.
