My research, as Professor and Principal Investigator at Kasralainy Medical School, Zewail City of Science and Technology, and Egyptian Chinese University, focuses on unravelling the complex roles of microglia in maintaining brain health and their involvement in the pathology of neurodegenerative diseases. Utilizing in vivo models and advanced techniques like flow cytometry and RNA sequencing, we explore the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying microglia functional shifts and their potential for therapeutic manipulation. My investigation of the microenvironment niche controlling immune cell responses culminated in significant publications, mainly in Journal of Cellular Physiology and Frontiers in Physiology, highlighting the impact of my research. I aim to translate my research findings into effective strategy that modulate microglial activity, with subsequent effects on neuronal activity through microglia-neuronal communication via various gap junctions. In our opinion, our research could provide new strategies for improving cognitive and brain function, as well as provide hope to patients suffering from neurodegenerative diseases.
