Bio

   Mona El Falaki is a Professor of Pediatric Allergy and Pulmonology at the Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University since 2001, and is the head of the Pediatric Allergy and Pulmonology Unit and the Pediatric Respiratory Lab, Department of Pediatrics, Cairo University Hospital since 2005. She graduated 1982 signed excellent with honors and acquired her medical degree in 1990. She had a pre-doctoral training in Internal Medicine at St. Joseph Hospital in Berlin, Germany in 1979 and in Erlangen-Nurnberg University in 1980 in Germany (via the DAAD). She conducted post doctoral training on pediatric allergy and pulmonology and infant lung function in Germany (Berlin 1999, Freiburg 2002, Munich 2005).

 

   She shared in the foundation of the pediatric lung function lab 2000, which she upgraded and modernized in 2014. She is the initiator and organizer of the following services in the Pediatric Allergy and Pulmonology Unit, Cairo University which is the only center providing such services in Egypt:  Cystic Fibrosis Lab and Clinic in 2005 (trained a team of 5 staff members), Home Ventilation Services project in 2006, the Pediatric Polysomnography lab in 2008, Nitric Oxide measurements in Exhaled Air in 2009, Pediatric Fiberoptic  Bronchoscopy 2010 and Pediatric Esophageal PH and Impedance in 2012. The Pediatric Allergy and Pulmonology Unit at the Cairo University is now a well recognized center of excellence both nationally and internationally for its clinical and technical expertise, international publications, educational and training activities and for contributing regularly in national and international scientific meetings.

    She participated in several National Health Projects to raise awareness of pediatric respiratory problems in Egypt, in particular bronchial asthma, including the Conjoint Egyptian American Project titled “Bronchial Asthma in Egyptian Children- a clinical, environmental and immunological study”. This project was completed under the patronage of the Foreign Relation Co-ordination Unit-FRCU and the Supreme Council of Egyptian Universities. She was also involved in the Egyptian National Asthma Control Program (NACP) in cooperation with “The Regional Office of WHO”. In addition she shared in writing “The Asthmatic Child - The Egyptian Guidelines” in cooperation with the Egyptian Society of Pediatrics as part of the Egyptian National Asthma Control Program-NACP.

     Prof. El Falaki is an active participant in the Continuous Medical Education Programs on Pediatric Allergy and Pulmonology  held yearly under supervision of the  Egyptian Medical Syndicate in different locations in Egypt and in The National Training Center under supervision of the Egyptian ministry of health.

      Her main research fields and current interests involve pediatric asthma, particularly early life wheezing, Cystic  Fibrosis with special relevance to  Egyptian phenotypes and genetic background, effect of neonatal pulmonary disorders on infant lung functions and esophageal ph and impedance in infants with GERD  and failure to thrive.

   Prof. El Falaki is a board member in the International congress of pediatric Pulmonology (ICPP), a member of the GINA (Global Initiative of Asthma) and GINA Mediterranean assemblies, an executive board member in the Arab Pediatric Pulmonary Association (APPA) and a board member of the Egyptian Society of Allergy and Immunology (ESAI). She is also a member of the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI), the European Society of Pediatric Allergy and Immunology (ESPAI) and the American Thoracic Society (ATS). She is an invited guest speaker in leading national, regional and international advisory board meetings and conferences.
