Biography

Muhammad Salem is a Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Urban & Regional Planning, Cairo University. He earned his master’s degree from the same institution in 2014 before pursuing a doctoral degree in Engineering at Kyushu University, Japan, which he successfully completed in 2020. His exceptional research capabilities and dedication were recognized in 2021 when he was awarded the prestigious JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science.

Muhammad’s research primarily focuses on peri-urban areas, exploring critical topics such as land-use change, urban remote sensing, urban sprawl, sustainable development, and the application of deep learning techniques in urban analysis. His interdisciplinary approach integrates cutting-edge methodologies to address contemporary urban challenges.

Muhammad serves on the editorial board of Discover Cities (Springer), as Technical Editor of the Journal of Urban Research (Cairo University), and as Review Editor for Cities in the Global South at Frontiers in Sustainable Cities. He is also a regular reviewer for several leading Q1 and Q2 journals in urban studies, geography, and development.

Beyond academia, Muhammad actively contributes to urban planning practice as a certified expert at the General Organization of Physical Planning (GOPP) in Egypt, where he applies his expertise to national and regional planning initiatives. Muhammad is also an active member of the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society, demonstrating his commitment to staying at the forefront of research and technological advancements in geospatial analysis.

Through his multifaceted roles as a lecturer, certified expert, editorial board member, and society member, Muhammad remains dedicated to making a meaningful impact on urban and regional planning. His contributions are instrumental in shaping sustainable urban developmentand addressing the pressing challenges faced by peri-urban and metropolitan areas worldwide.
