Karim Soliman is currently an assistant lecturer in the Department of Pharmaceutics and Industrial Pharmacy at Cairo University. After he got his Bachelor degree in Pharmaceutical Scicens from Cairo University (2006), Karim was appointed as a demonstrator in the Department of Pharmaceutics and Industrial Pharmacy. He was awarded Master degree (2012) followed by PhD (2016) in Pharmaceutics by Cairo University.

Karim is interested in formulation and characterization of different solid dosage forms for enhanced oral delivery of poorly soluble drugs. In order to overcome swallowing problems with autistic children and uncooperative schizophrenic adults, he strived through a research project to formulate risperidone as solid dispersions and solid nano-emulsions in effervescent tablets. He studied how different solvent evaporation techniques (freeze-drying, vacuum-drying and oven-drying) affect the physicochemical properties of the product. In another study, he exploited different applications of nanotechnology (nano-crystallization and nano-emulsification) to improve oral bioavailability of avanafil. He extensively studied the effects of different nano-crystallization technologies (high pressure homogenization, anti-solvent precipitation and probe sonication) on the physicochemical properties of the nanoparticles. Moreover, he studied the physicochemical properties, stability and bioavailability of drug-loaded solid self-nanoemulsifying drug delivery systems. The effects of polymers on avanafil-β-cyclodextrin inclusion complexes were investigated as well.

During his research work, Karim gained experience in different characterization techniques of solid states, nanoparticles and nanoemulsions, including differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Furthermore, stability and bioavailability studies of the prepared formulas involved using different procedures for in vitro and in vivo assay of drugs.

Karim's research work resulted in six publications in peer-reviewed journals including

International Journal of Pharmaceutics

(2 publications),

European Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences

and

Drug Delivery

. He also presented his work at three local and international conferences including

FIP congress (Dusseldorf, 2015)

and

AAPS Arden conference (Maryland, 2016)

.
