Hoda M. Abou Shady

                                                 Biography

Professor Hoda Abou-Shady is Professor of Nuclear and Radiation Physics at Cairo University, where she has held a chair for over three decades. She currently serves as Director of an Egyptian–Italian vocational and technical education development project under the Egyptian Cabinet, leading efforts to reform technical education through international collaboration.

She received her PhD in Theoretical Nuclear Physics from Cairo University in 1997, with her thesis examined by committees from Heidelberg University and University of Tübingen. Prior to returning to Egypt, she held teaching appointments at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of the Sciences.

Her research has evolved from theoretical nuclear structure to experimental radiation physics, with current work spanning radiation shielding, nanomaterial-based immobilization of heavy metals and radionuclides, and environmental applications of physics. She supervises an active group of doctoral and master’s students at Cairo University, and has ongoing research contributions, including work currently under review in Scientific Reports (Nature Portfolio).

Professor Abou-Shady has held several leadership and national roles, including Assistant to the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research (2014–2018), member of the Presidential Advisory Board for Education and Scientific Research, and member of the Board of the Egyptian Atomic Energy Authority. She also served as Founding Dean of the Faculty of Nanotechnology at Cairo University (2020–2021), becoming the first woman to hold a deanship in a technical faculty at a public university in Egypt.

Her international experience includes training and research appointments at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the International Atomic Energy Agency, and CERN.

She was awarded the title of Chevalier des Palmes Académiques by the French Republic in 2022 in recognition of her contributions to education and international academic cooperation.

Her current work bridges advanced scientific research with education reform, focusing on innovation, capacity building, and aligning scientific training with societal and industrial needs.

She welcomes international research collaborations, visiting appointments, and conference invitations in nuclear physics, radiation science, and the environmental applications of physics.

تشغل الأستاذة الدكتورة هدى أبو شادي منصب أستاذ الفيزياء النووية والإشعاعية بكلية العلوم، جامعة القاهرة، حيث عملت بالكلية لأكثر من ثلاثة عقود. وتشغل حالياً منصب مدير مشروع مصري–إيطالي لتطوير التعليم الفني والتكنولوجي تحت إشراف مجلس الوزراء، بهدف دعم إصلاح منظومة التعليم الفني من خلال التعاون الدولي.

حصلت سيادتها على درجة الدكتوراه في الفيزياء النووية النظرية من جامعة القاهرة عام 1997، بعد تحكيم الرسالة من قبل لجان علمية من جامعتي هايدلبرج وتوبنجن بألمانيا. كما عملت بالتدريس في عدد من الجامعات الدولية، منها جامعة بنسلفانيا وجامعة العلوم بفيلادلفيا بالولايات المتحدة الأمريكية.

تطورت أبحاثها من الفيزياء النووية النظرية إلى الفيزياء الإشعاعية التطبيقية، حيث تشمل اهتماماتها الحالية الوقاية من الإشعاع، واستخدام المواد النانوية في تثبيت المعادن الثقيلة والنظائر المشعة، والتطبيقات البيئية للفيزياء. وتشرف على مجموعة نشطة من طلاب الدراسات العليا بجامعة القاهرة.

شغلت عدة مناصب قيادية ووطنية، منها مساعد وزير التعليم العالي والبحث العلمي (2014–2018)، وعضو المجلس الاستشاري الرئاسي للتعليم والبحث العلمي، وعضو مجلس إدارة هيئة الطاقة الذرية المصرية. كما شغلت منصب عميد مؤسس لكلية النانوتكنولوجي بجامعة القاهرة (2020–2021)، كأول سيدة تتولى عمادة كلية تكنولوجية بجامعة حكومية في مصر.

كما شاركت في العديد من المهام والتدريبات الدولية، من بينها مختبر أوك ريدج القومي بالولايات المتحدة، والوكالة الدولية للطاقة الذرية بفيينا، وهيئة الأبحاث النووية الأوروبية CERN.

وقد مُنحت وسام فارس في السعف الأكاديمية (Chevalier des Palmes Académiques) من الجمهورية الفرنسية عام 2022 تقديراً لإسهاماتها في تطوير التعليم والتعاون الأكاديمي الدولي.

وتركز اهتماماتها الحالية على الربط بين البحث العلمي وتطوير التعليم، ودعم الابتكار، وبناء القدرات البشرية بما يتوافق مع احتياجات المجتمع والصناعة.

وترحب بالتعاون البحثي الدولي، والدعوات الأكاديمية، والمشاركة في المؤتمرات في مجالات الفيزياء النووية والفيزياء الإشعاعية والتطبيقات البيئية للفيزياء.
