Dr. Hussein Anis received his B.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from Cairo University in 1966. He received his Master’s and Ph.D. degrees from McGill University, Montreal, Canada, in 1970 and 1973, respectively. During the period February 1973 till September 1974, Dr. Anis was a senior researcher at Hydro-Quebec Research Institute, Canada. Dr.Anis joined Cairo University as an Assistant Professor in October 1974, where he became an Associate Professor and then a Professor in 1979 and 1984, respectively. From 2002 to 2005 Dr. Anis was the vice-president of the Arab Open University, whose seat is in Kuwait but runs branches in seven Arab countries.
Dr. Anis’ main area of interest is High Voltage Engineering. He is also interested in higher education enhancement and quality. Dr. Anis was the principal investigator or the Co-PI of ten internationally funded technical and scientific research projects. Dr. Anis published more than 160 technical, scientific, and academic research papers. He co-authored an internationally published book on High Voltage Engineering and another on Quality in Higher Education. Dr. Anis acted as reviewer to many international journals and conferences. Dr. Anis was a visiting professor, collaborated, and/or conducted joint research with numerous North American, British and Arab universities, worked with a large number of international organizations, and worked as a consultant to many international firms, and many Egyptian industrial firms.
Dr. Anis is a member of many international societies. He is also a member of a number of national committees of CIGRE (Paris) and IEC (Geneva), where Dr. Anis was nominated to represent Egypt on the subject of Environmental Effects of ELF Electromagnetic Fields in 1994. From 1991 to 1998, Dr. Anis directed a World Bank project, the Engineering Education Development (EEDP) in Egypt, which aimed at upgrading engineering education in Egypt through re-equipping experimental facilities, development of curricula, and training of faculty in engineering colleges. From Sept 2005 to June 2006, Dr. Anis conducted the feasibility study on the establishment of the first Egyptian E-learning University. Dr. Anis served on numerous academic and higher education committees, including chairing the committee for promoting university professors in Electric Power, chairing Cairo University’s Research Planning Committee, membership of Supreme Council of Universities' Sector Committee on Engineering, membership of the National Committee of Study Missions, membership of Cairo University's project on "Futuristic Outlook until 2020", membership of Cairo University's Center for Performance Assessment, and acted as an advisor to a number of Ministers of Higher Education.
Dr. Anis is the recipient of many awards, including the Egyptian promotional prize (Tashgeeya) (1981), Medal of Science and Arts of the First Order (1982), award of scientific distinction (Tafawoq) (1998), Cairo University’s award of distinction (Taqderya) (2007), and the national life-long distinction award (Taqderya) (2008). His biography appears in four international and three national biographical volumes of distinguished personalities.
