Omneia Amin Helmy, Ph.D

Dr. Omneia Helmy is Professor of International Economics, Faculty of Economics and Political Science (FEPS), Cairo University. Previously Dr. Helmy held the position of Vice-Dean for Post Graduate Studies and Research and the position of Director of the Center for Economic and Financial Research and Studies at (FEPS). She was the Acting Executive Director and Director of Research at the Egyptian Center for Economic Studies (ECES).
Dr. Helmy is also a visiting professor at the University of Barcelona, Spain, in addition to her appointment as affiliate professor of economics at George Mason University, USA. She is consultant for the World Trade Organization (WTO); a policy affiliate at the Economic Research Forum (ERF); and a founding member of the Egyptian Center for Global Governance and Development (ECGGD). Dr. Helmy is a member of the Supreme Council for Culture, the advisory board of the Egyptian Science, Technology, and Innovation Observatory (ESTIO); the economic and administrative council of Egypt’s Scientific Research and Technology Academy; the Scientific Committee of the Egyptian Cabinet’s Information and Decision Support Center (IDSC), the Egyptian Society for Political Economy, Statistics and Legislation; and the Arab Society for Economic Research.
Dr. Helmy has undertaken several professional activities at various prominent organizations including the World Bank; the World Trade Organization; the German Development Institute; the Egyptian Center for Economic Studies; and the Center for Economic and Financial Research and Studies at Cairo University.
Dr. Helmy is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of African Trade. Her research includes the impact of budget deficit on inflation in Egypt; exchange rate pass-through to inflation in Egypt; the impact of capital inflows on Egypt’s exchange rate policy; foreign portfolio equity investment in Egypt; European direct investments in Egypt; global food price shock and the poor in Egypt and Ukraine; maritime transport and related logistics services in Egypt; fiscal implications of trade liberalization in Egypt; competitiveness of Egypt in the EU Market; skill demand polarization; minimum wage policy; efficiency and equity of subsidy policy in Egypt; the pension system in Egypt; efficiency of the bankruptcy system in Egypt and the economic development strategy for Beni Suef Governorate . Dr. Helmy earned her Ph.D. in economics from Cairo University.
