Professor of Clinical Pathology, Director of Quality Assurance Unit, National Cancer Institute

Professional Clinical Experience:

            Dr Amira Soliman is the Director of Quality Management Unit at NCI, since 2011, a 580 hospital for Oncology. She has the skills of Project management and Leadership. Her expertise lies in the field of Clinical Laboratory Management and preparation for Accreditation by ISO 15189, she has conducted two projects for Lab Accreditation at the National Cancer Institute for the Bone Marrow Transplant Lab and Haematology Lab from 2010 to 2016. These are the first projects for Accreditation of Medical Laboratories at Cairo University. She has conducted many training sessions for the lab medical staff, junior doctors and professors about Laboratory Quality Management and Accreditation. 

            She is the Executive Project Manager for a mega project for the Preparation for Accreditation of the National Cancer Institute as an Teaching and Research University Institute for Oncology which started in 2012, according to the Requirements for Egyptian National Authority for Quality Assurance and Accreditation of Education (NAQAAE). The National Cancer Institute has been awarded the Accreditation from NAQAAE on 29/9/2016 , under the leadership of Dr Amira, all through the journey, and has successfully achieved it from the first visit.

            Dr Amira is a Consultant in Healthcare and Quality Management. She worked as the Quality Manager for the Medical Laboratory at NCI since 2004 till 2013. She shared in the preparation of the hospital, to achieve the certificate of ISO 9001:2000 for the hospital, in year 2006 and ISO 9001:2008 in August, 2009, from American Systems Registrars (ASR).     She provides planning, and conducting Internal Audit for the Management requirements for the NCI hospital according to JCI standards. She worked on the introduction and establishment of JCI standards for Hospital Accreditation and implementing the International Patient Safety Goals since 2011. She provides  training on Internal Audit, how to write Policies and Procedures, Quality objectives, key performance indicators KPIs, performance appraisal, how to write job descriptions and job analysis, motivation of employees. She has conducted  many Training courses on the International Patient Safety Goals. In addition, She was responsible for establishing the job descriptions for the academic, technical and management jobs at NCI Egypt, and the restructuring of the Organization Chart and Organization Manual 2013 with introduction of new departments.  Dr Amira led the development of the Strategic Plan of NCI (2015-2020), She carried out the SWOT analysis and set with the Strategic committee, the Strategic Objectives and Action plan. She has introduced Risk Management and Occupational Health and Safety requirements at NCI. She has established the Code of Ethics for NCI and its implementation, as a main requirement for Accreditation.

            Dr Amira, is the Head of Training and Development Unit, at NCI. She has conducted 30 training courses in years 2014 & 2015, for Medical and Nonmedical Staff according to a Training Needs Assessment and annual plan.  She organized and conducted many lectures on Quality Management and Accreditation in addition to Hematology and Immunology lectures, as part of Clinical Pathology Curriculum for postgraduate and doctorate candidates at NCI.  She has conducted 3 workshops in Dec 2010, June 2011 and June 2012, which were in the activities of Accreditation Project BMT Lab Unit, at NCI, Cairo University, about Laboratory Quality Management and Steps towards Accreditation with ISO 15189, as a speaker and organizer. She introduced for the first time at NCI, lectures about Patients Rights and Responsibilities and Ethics in Laboratory Medicine., and lectures about Human resources Management in the Medical Laboratory.

            Dr Amira Soliman is a Professor of Clinical Pathology and Oncologic Laboratory Medicine. After the MD, She was awarded three PG Diplomas in Hospital Administration & Total Quality Management from the AUC, and JCI Certificate of Achievement in Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety.  She is a Certified Assessor for ISO 15189:2012 Requirements at EGAC (Egyptian Accreditation Council).

            She has an experience of 27 years, (18 years post MD) in diagnosis of laboratory medicine, including malignant hematologic diseases, blood chemistry, viral hepatitis and tumor immunology.  Dr Amira has worked at NCI, Cairo University, since 1992, till present. She is the Owner and Managing Director of UniLAB, since 2002 till present , she is responsible for managing daily operations, in addition to technical and medical supervision, interpretation of results and managing customer satisfaction. She prepared the policies and procedures for lab processes and performs evaluation of  work activities of medical and technical personnel of UniLab Medical Laboratory. She is committed to Conducting Medical Research in oncology field as part of her main interests and duties, and has published more than 20 scientific researches in well recognized medical journals

Her fields of expertise include the following:

  • In Hematology: Examination & interpretation of bone marrow aspiration (with conventional and Cytochemical stains) and bone marrow biopsy (with conventional and immunohistochemical stains), with interpretation and diagnosis of hematological diseases and malignancies.                           
  • In Immunology: Examination & interpretation of auto antibodies by immunofluorescent microscope, immunoblot and ELISA. Examination & interpretation of HLA typing (lymphomicro-cytotoxicity and molecular technique). Familiarity with manual and automated ELISA systems and interpretation of virology results.
  • Clinical chemistry: Interpretation of pathological blood chemistry, tumor marker results, and familiarity with Proficiency survey reports.
  • In Virology: Diagnosis of viral Hepatitis by serology and molecular biology. Interpretation of Chronic Liver diseases & response to treatment and predisposition to Liver cancer.
