Dr. Bahira M.S. Lotfy is a faculty staff, researcher, team leader and consultant with over 30 years of experience in leading health and safety and environmental assessments at Kasr El-Aini Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University Hospitals (CUH), the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), as well as in many local, regional and international organizations. She has a wide experience in occupational health and safety, Infection control, environmental waste management concerns including hazardous waste management, radiation protection, chemical safety, occupational and environmental mutagenesis, environmental auditing (for compliance) and inspection (for enforcement).
Dr. Bahira was engaged in the implementation of Health Care Waste Management system at Cairo University Hospitals since 1999. Her work included preparation of guidelines and codes of practice, training of over 500 nurses and technicians during the early period of implementation. Dr. Bahira worked in the field of infection control at Cairo University Hospitals and is a member of the infection control higher committee for more than 10 years. She is engaged in training assignment of healthcare team in the field of Health Care Waste Management at CUH, the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP), the Egyptian environmental Affairs Agency (EEAA) and the Ministry of Manpower and Migration (MoMM).
Dr. Bahira was involved in a number of research and training assignments with the East Mediterranean Regional Office of the World Health Organization (EMRO-WHO) and Cairo Office of the International Labor Organization (ILO). Among the assignments, were: study of Child workers in Pottery handicrafts workshops in south Cairo region, training of inspectors at the MoMM in the fields of Health Care Waste Management, Construction, as well as on reporting on Response of the Member States to the WHO-EMRO Questionnaire on Global Strategy for Occupational Health for All. Dr. Bahira was engaged in training assignments with the ILO on Occupational Safety and Health in Construction Sector in Egypt (2007-2008) as well as with WHO on Protecting Health care workers from needle stick injuries in Egypt and in Kuwait (2010 – 2012).
Dr. Bahira has frequent expertise in interfacing with international and local NGOs, government agencies, and private companies' activities. As a university staff and research worker, she published more than 40 papers in Egyptian and International Journals. Special areas of her interest are infection control, Health Care Waste Management, Radiation Protection, Public Health Issues, Environmental Health, Occupational Health and Safety.
Dr. Bahira is an active member in a number of Local and National Committees dealing with Infection Control, Hazardous Waste Management, Environmental Issues, Radiation Protection, Occupational Safety and Health, Needle Stick Prevention, and various Public Health Issues. She is currently in charge of supervising the Health Surveillance and Vaccination Program for Healthcare team at CUH.
