Academic Biography – Aseel Samir ElGazazz

Aseel Samir ElGazazz is an Assistant Lecturer in Italian Literature at the Department of Italian, Faculty of Arts, Cairo University. She is also a Ph.D. Researcher at the Department of Italian, Faculty of Al-Alsun, Ain Shams University. Her research lies at the intersection of modern Italian literature and Arabic comparative literature.

Since 2023 until 31 July 2025, she has been a Visiting Ph.D. Researcher at the Department of Religious Sciences at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan, Italy, as part of a MAECI-funded co-tutelle program. Her ongoing doctoral work engages with comparative literary analysis within both Italian and Arab literary traditions.

Aseel earned her Master’s degree in Italian Literature from Ain Shams University with highest distinction, with a thesis titled “Potere e Oppressione ne I Promessi Sposi di Alessandro Manzoni.” During her master’s studies, she conducted research at the Casa del Manzoni library in Milan. She also completed a Bachelor’s degree in Italian Studies (with English as a second language) at Cairo University, graduating with highest honours as the top student in her class and in the Faculty of Arts.

Her professional experience at Cairo University began in 2013 as a Teaching Assistant in Italian Studies, followed by her appointment as Assistant Lecturer in 2019. She taught courses in Italian literature, history of literature, translation, Italian grammar and conversation. Beyond her teaching duties, she served as an active member of the Accreditation and Quality Assurance Committees, and she has represented her department in international academic environments.

Her academic activities include participation in several international conferences and publications. She has presented research at events such as the Macerata Festival of the Humanities and the International Conference of Al-Alsun, Luxor University. Her article “Struttura e narratore ne I Promessi Sposi di Alessandro Manzoni” was published in Romanica Silesiana (University of Silesia in Katowice, 2020).

Throughout her academic career, Aseel has received numerous distinctions, including being ranked first in all her undergraduate and postgraduate studies, and winning first place in the national playwriting competition “Italy on Stage” in 2013. She was also awarded a scholarship from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) in 2023–2025 for her doctoral research in Milan.

Aseel’s scholarly interests encompass modern and contemporary Italian literature, comparative literature between Italy and the Arab world.
